A S.C. Highway Patrol trooper has been released from the hospital after he was involved in a crash while responding to another wreck this morning, authorities said.

The first wreck, involving a motorcycle, happened about 7 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 17A, College Park Road and Old Summerville Road. One person was airlifted from the scene in critical condition.

A second wreck involving the trooper happened about 7:20 a.m. on U.S. 176, about two miles from the first wreck. The trooper had blue lights and siren activated when the cruiser struck a Jeep SUV.

“All indications are that traffic was yielding for the marked cruiser when the SUV pulled onto the highway in front of the trooper’s marked cruiser,” according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Berkeley County EMS took the trooper to a local hospital and he was later discharged, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said.

Information was not available on the condition of the SUV driver.
