GREENSBORO, N.C. — The second-seeded College of Charleston softball team was held to five hits in a 3-1 loss to seventh-seeded Western Carolina in the first round of the double-elimination Southern Conference championship on Wednesday afternoon.

Lizzy Vaughn drove in the lone run for the Cougars (34-19), who fall into the consolation bracket and will now face the loser of No. 3 Georgia Southern-No. 6 Chattanooga game at 9 a.m. today. The Cougars must now win five straight games to be crowned champion.

Charleston Southern junior catcher Marci Christian, who hit a school single-season record 15 home runs, was named to the All-Big South first team as a utility player. Third baseman Stephanie Sbardella and outfielder Jana Matthews were named second team All-Big South. Jennifer Giles made Big South All-Academic.

Ninth-seeded Charleston Southern opens the Big South Conference tournament at 9 a.m. today against No. 8 seed Presbyterian in Rock Hill.

Football

Citadel senior Ben Dupree was selected as one of 32 FCS quarterbacks on the College Football Performance Awards watch list for the upcoming season.

Dupree has 1,671 career rushing yards.

The Bulldogs open the season at home on Aug. 31 against Charleston Southern.
