Wando vs. Fort Mill, 1:30 p.m.

Let Bishop England coach Jeff Weiner count the ways.

“We usually play them three times a year,” the coach said after the Bishops upset No. 1 seed Wando, 15-13, Tuesday night to win the Lower State championship. “And, we’ve been playing them for four years. So 12 games, one win. We finally won one. But they made me sweat.”

The Bishops topped Wando to win their first Lower State championship since the sport was sanctioned by the High School League four years ago.

The Bishops will play J.L. Mann in the state championship, which is at 11 a.m. Saturday at White Knoll High School.

The Bishops held a comfortable 10-6 lead when Wando reeled off four straight scores to tie the score. But the Bishops’ Jordan Mitchell scored two goals in a four-minute stretch to give the Bishops a 12-10 lead.

“We worked hard,” Mitchell said. “We didn’t think about past games. We weren’t going to give up. We were really excited to win. This is the only time we’ve beat them. We beat them in a scrimmage. But this was a real game.”

Tuesday’s victory was the Bishops’ first over Wando in three games this season. The Warriors posted 14-12 and 12-10 victories in the regular season. But the third game was the one that mattered most as the Bishop (15-4) ended Wando’s bid for its second state championship in three years. It marked the second straight year the Warriors’ season ended in the Lower State championship.

Mitchell scored five goals to lead the Bishops while Elena Bosco chipped in with four. Ellie Burton and Taylor Kennington both produced two scores.

The Warrior’s Allie Bucknam had nine goals and one assist. Alyssa Smith and Moriah Dodson scored two goals apiece.

“We held on. We’ve come back before,” Weiner said. “We actually played well in the first half and had to hold on. We’re young. We have four sophomores who made all-state. But we grew up today.”
