Charleston International Airport officials have set their price for land that Boeing Co. wants to buy, but that number is different from the aerospace giant’s own calculation.

A Charleston County Aviation Authority committee voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend the airport’s appraised price for the 320 acres.

Boeing conducted its own appraisal for the site.

Neither figure was disclosed, but Airports Director Sue Stevens said the two appraisals were not an “apples-to-apples comparison.”

She declined to say how far apart the two sides are. The price will be disclosed once the deal is finalized for the public property.

The airport’s three-member land sale committee considered Boeing’s valuation of the property, but the panel, which is chaired by former Congressman Tommy Hartnett, recommended the airport’s assessment instead.

That came after a nearly two-hour, closed-door meeting where the panel tried to balance a host of public interests, said former state lawmaker Ben Hagood, an attorney who’s on the Aviation Authority.

Those interests include Boeing’s economic impact in the region, the committee’s responsibility to oversee the airport’s assets, and the consideration that the Federal Aviation Administration must sign off on the purchase price.

The recommendation will go to the full authority board in February.

Boeing South Carolina spokeswoman Candy Eslinger said Tuesday that the company had not been notified of the decision, but it will continue discussions.

Boeing, which built its 787 assembly plant on land it leases from the airport, wants to buy 320 acres along International Boulevard for future development across the street from its campus.

Boeing also wants the right of first refusal on 488 acres straddling Michaux Parkway and bordered by Dorchester Road and Charleston Air Force Base. Additionally, the company wants an option to buy 265 acres under its existing airplane-making site. Those properties were not part of the appraisals discussed Tuesday, Stevens said.

Boeing has not said what it intends to do with the property, but the company’s top lawyer in South Carolina said in December the land is for anticipated future growth.

CBRE of Atlanta conducted the appraisal for Boeing.

Sass, Herrin & Associates prepared the Aviation Authority’s appraisal. One of the co-owners in that firm is Charleston County Councilman Herb Sass.
