The man accused of shooting a Charleston police officer after a traffic stop in West Ashley Saturday night was out of jail on bond after being arrested in a drug bust several weeks ago,

Police identified the man who shot the officer as Mark Blake Jr., 26.

Blake was arrested Feb. 23 after a search of his apartment on Jobee Drive and charged with three counts of distribution of heroin, trafficking of heroin and cocaine possession. He was released from the Charleston County jail on $55,000 bail.

Blake, who was also shot during the confrontation, is at Medical University Hospital in stable condition, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said.

The officer who was shot is Cory Goldstein, Francis said. Goldstein has been with the Charleston police department since January 2012. He remains in the hospital, alert and talking to visitors, Francis said.

Charleston police stopped a red Hyundai with a North Carolina license plate on the ramp from southbound Savannah Highway to eastbound Interstate 526 about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Police drew their guns, and a man took off running from the car, according to a witness.

About 10 gunshots rang out, according to a witness. When it was over, a police officer and the fleeing motorist had been struck by multiple bullets.

“At the end of the foot pursuit, the suspect turned on the officer with a handgun,” Police Chief Greg Mullen said at the crime scene. “Shots were fired. Both the officer and the suspect were shot multiple times.”

It wasn’t clear whether the wounded officer was the one who shot Blake.

Both were in “stable” condition Saturday night, Mullen said.

Police closed off a section of Savannah Highway and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard until investigators could check out the scene after daylight.

Charleston police have not released further details, including why the car was pulled over. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating,
