Esquire: Two of top 20 new restaurants are in Charleston area
The accolades continue to pile up for Charleston area restaurants.

Esquire magazine has named two local dining establishments to its 2012 list of “Best New Restaurants.” Only 20 establishments nationwide made the list.
The Macintosh on King Street, opened by the Indigo Road restaurant group in September 2011, and Carter’s Kitchen in Mount Pleasant, which opened in February, landed on the annual list compiled by food critic John Mariani.
“Our team at the Macintosh has made an incredible effort to put in the time, work and love it takes to establish this restaurant as a major contender in the world of progressive American cuisine,” Indigo Road managing partner Steve Palmer said. “This makes it all worth it.”
The restaurant’s seasonally rotating menu allows executive chef and partner Jeremiah Bacon “the independence to experiment and develop a more personal style of rustic American cuisine,” Palmer said.
At Carter’s Kitchen in the I’On community off Mathis Ferry Road, chef and owner Robert Carter called the recognition an honor and a surprise.
“I never expected to come to Mount Pleasant and have my first restaurant in the national spotlight,” Carter said. “It shows that fantastic food can be found in Mount Pleasant.”
He credited his staff for providing service, friendliness, consistency and attention to detail.
It’s not the first time a Charleston restaurant connected to Carter has received the award. In 1997, Esquire bestowed the honor on Peninsula Grill, where Carter served as executive chef. Hank’s Seafood Restaurant, where Carter was an opening partner, also picked up the award.
Indigo Road is no stranger to the distinction either.
Two years ago, Esquire awarded O-Ku, Indigo Road’s trendy Asian restaurant on King Street, a best newcomer honor. In addition, the Macintosh also landed on Bon Appetit’s 50 Best New Restaurants for 2012, following recognition by the James Beard Foundation as a 2012 semifinalist for Best New Restaurant.
In a related Esquire note, the magazine’s “Eat Like a Man” blog gave top honors to Home Team BBQ for its ribs.
